Greece-East Germany : the road towards recognition and the agreement for cultural and scientific collaboration

Abstract:
entity known as the German Democratic Republic, or East Germany, intensified, in the 70s and 80s, its contacts with various western countries, including Greece. The first steps towards recognition and cooperation were made during the colonels’ dictatorship (1972: commercial exchanges; 1973: official recognition of the GDR by the Greek military regime). These efforts went on after the collapse of the Greek junta (1974) and especially under the socialist government of Andreas Papandreou (1981-1989), when many agreements were signed between the two states and official cultural exchanges and manifestations were regularly taking place. In 1988, a second three-year agreement on cultural and scientific cooperation was signed (the first one had been signed in 1985 and covered the period 1985-1988), but it was never implemented because of the collapse of the GDR in 1989.
