Abstract:
The Pancyprian Gymnasium is the oldest Secondary School and the first educational institution in Cyprus. It was founded in 1812 by the Archbishop of Cyprus Kyprianos and was originally named “Hellenic School”. In 1893, with Cyprus under the rule of the British Empire, the school developed into a six-grade secondary school and was recognized by the Greek government as equivalent to secondary schools in Greece. In 1896 it was given its present name “The Pancyprian Gymnasium”. In 1893, the Parnassos Literary Society played an important role in securing the adequate educational personnel for the new school, following a request in that sense addressed to the PLS by the Educational Committee appointed to that effect by the Archbishop of Cyprus Sophronios. Here the author presents an exchange of letters between the Cypriots and the PLS administration testifying to that endeavor.
