Abstract:
The wide acceptance of the concept of emergent literacy has resulted in a number of studies concerning early childhood's knowledge and experience about written language. The process of early reading acquisition has been documented and it has been inferred that it includes three interrelated components of reading: The awareness of functions, the consciousness of forms and structure and the familiarization with the conventions of print. Based on these theoretical assumptions and a considerable number of research results the Test of Early Reading Skills, that is presented in this article, meets the needs of preschool children reading skills' assessment as it evaluates the development of early reading ability and its three interrelated components.
