Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the relation between Greek adolescent's stress and their academic achievement (school grades). Comparisons were made between stress in all domains and the mean of all school grades as well as stress in separate domains and school grades only in Mathematics and/or Language. The Problem Questionnaire (Seiffge-Krenke, 1995) was administered to 417 adolescents aged 12-13 and 14-15 yrs located in 9 schools of a metropolitan area. Adolescent's grades were obtained from the school files. The findings indicated that stress and academic achievement are conversely related. Morespecifically they revealed that: a) Greek adolescents with low grades had higher general stress (in all domains) and also higher stress regarding school, their future, relationships with parents and themselves b) Adolescents with high grades in Mathematics had higher general stress. The results are discussed in the light of the importance that education has in the Greek culture.
