Abstract:
We believe it will be useful to plot a didactic course for the teaching of the concepts of the natural environment which will be based on research data and compatible with the view of knowledge as the product of social and didactic interaction.To this end we have explored the original ideas and mental representations of young children concerning the growth and reproduction of plants, in order to design and implement a programme of didactic intervention for the nursery school. The intervention aims to reorganize possible initial mistaken models of interpretation associated with this theme and to assist the child to construct a body of empirical knowledge and thus facilitate the learning process.To be more specific, we analyzed the way in which children perceive seeds, if they classify them among living organisms, if they associate just one specific plant with each seed, what they think are the necessary conditions for the growth of the seed, how they believe a plant is reproduced, etc. The results of the research demonstrated that the children who participated in the experimental group reorganized to a great extent their original mistaken ideas.
