Abstract:
Dyslexia is a language-based disorder manifested by difficulty in reading, writing, spelling and organizational skills. It is a life-long disability and its manifestations change with age. Going to university is often a big step for many dyslexic students. The purpose of this paper is to describe the transition from secondary to tertiary education for Greek dyslexic pupils. In particular, we investigate the incidence of dyslexia in secondary school graduates and how dyslexic students are distributed across University subject areas. The most important conclusion that can be drawn from this small-scale research is that dyslexia is not necessarily a barrier to success in higher education. Equal opportunities and the opening of Universities to society enable the entry of dyslexic students into higher education who may require special support in order to learn and study effectively.
