Abstract:
Τhe achievement of university status for teacher education came about at a period of transition toward the “populist" university and as a result, during a period of overproduction of graduates and of inflation of university degrees. At a time when the formal titles are loosing their initial value for placement and career development in the respective work positions, it is necessary to give greater emphasis to the content of study programs, with ultimate aim the successful readjustment of the conditions which have radically changed. From this perspective, the university studies of teachers are examined, using the theoretical background of the theory of the professions. Based on this we assess that the teacher must be given, during his studies, a specialization in selected areas such as natural sciences, mathematics, language, etc., otherwise, the specialists of these fields will take over part of the teachers work and expertise and as a result this will lead to further deterioration of the teachers' scientific position and social status.
