Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to assess six characteristics of an effective kindergarten teacher identified in a previous study (Theophilides, 1999). The population included all teachers (N = 367) serving in state and community pre-primary educational institutions of Cyprus during the school year 1999-2000. Data were collected through a questionnaire sent to all kindergarten teachers (response rate 60.5%) and discussion across four four-member focus groups of teachers. Three salient characteristics emerged: love for children; effective pre-service training and continued professional development; professionalism and commitment. The remaining three characteristics - effective communication skills; a well-rounded personality; verbal ability – were also judged as essential qualities of an effective teacher. Based on individual analysis of each characteristic, the paper proposes the profile of an effective kindergarten teacher. It also discusses the implications of the study for the selection process of kindergarten teachers as well as for their pre-service and in-service training.
