Abstract:
The present article proposes an interdisciplinary collaboration between Cultural Anthropology and Education Studies in Greece. Anthropology of Education abroad exists since several decades and constitutes a distinctive field of research and studies than Sociology of Education. It is heavily based on the theoretical and practical principles of Ethnography. Ethnography both as methodology and as theory is against a monolithic attitude towards knowledge, advances instead multi dimensional approaches of acquiring knowledge. The practice of ethnographic interview for example offers to students the alternative of acquiring knowledge outside the school walls and beyond written documents. This paper argues for the benefits for school curriculum from the anthropological point of view. Ethnography as methodology and Cultural Anthropology as theory and corpus of knowledge can advantage the modern dialogue in Educational Sciences about bringing knowledge closer to students and breaking the walls between students of different ethnic background. In this perspective this interdisciplinary approach moves forward the goals of intercultural education and expands its agenda. The present article endeavors to support this argument in hand of several examples from Greek school books.
