Abstract:
The present theoretical article critically presents important issues regarding reading comprehension development, the definition and the nature of reading comprehension difficulties. More specifically, the paper focuses on factors that influence reading comprehension development in the context of a cognitive-developmental model of metalinguistic development and reading acquisition. It also addresses issues concerning the different criteria used in order to define reading comprehension difficulties within a general model conceptualizing reading disability as well as the variables that differentiate between good and poor comprehenders. Finally, recommendations are made for reliable assessment and effective intervention.
