Abstract:
During the last twenty years an increased interest about the "newly appointed teacher" has been observed. Research findings along with theoretical discussions, stress the importance of the first years in the teaching profession for both the career and the professionalism of the teachers. In the case of Cyprus, despite that importance, there has been no substantial research related to the newly appointed teachers. Thus, this paper attempts to investigate the needs and problems faced by the newly appointed primary teachers in Cyprus. The conclusions discussed are based on research conducted in primary schools in Cyprus. The intention of the paper is to trigger the discussion in Cyprus on an important issue, in view of the attempted educational reform in this country.
