The study aimed to examine the development of morphological awareness on 78 primary school students (Primary 1-6). The assessments evaluated epilinguistic and metalinguistic levels of morphological development on oral speech and included derivation of words and pseudowords, derivation and decoding in sentence frameworks, understanding of morphological relations in word-pairs and word analogies. Results suggested a developmental progression in the acquisition of oral morphology across assessments. Epilinguistic levels are acquired earlier than metalinguistic levels of development. These findings are in line with those reported in the experimental literature and can be interpreted in the light of recent developmental models of literacy acquisition.
