Abstract:
The objective of this study was to explore whether and to what extent the shaping of self-esteem for schoolchildren (5th & 6th Elementary School Classes) is influenced by their perception of the adequacy of their family functioning.More particularly, the study explored the effect of the children's perception regarding their family functioning on:a) the children's global self-esteem, andb) the effect of demographic variables on the above relationships. The theoretical tools used in this study are:I. The theoretical model for the healthy functioning of family systems of Barnhill, L. R. (1975), and II. The multi-factorial model for the self of Susan Harter (1985).Quantitative methods have been used for the exploration of this particular subject. These took the form of a study that expanded on the whole island of Rhodes, where there is rural, intermediate and rural population. A sample of 1180 schoolchildren (5th & 6th Elementary School Classes) participated from all Elementary School of the island of Rhodes. The questionnaires filled by the children are:Questionnaire "Family Dynamics Measure", (1992) for the evaluation by the children of their family functioning.b) Questionnaire "Self-Perception Profile for Children" by Susan Harter, 1985, with two scales:"What am I like?" and "How important are these things to how you feel about yourself as a person?" for the evaluation of the children's global self-esteem.It is concluded from the findings that the children's perception for the level of family's functioning adequacy is significantly related to their global self-esteem. It was found that mutuality among family members, role reciprocity, clear communication and stability, are the dimensions of family functioning that are more closely related to the family functioning adequacy. The effect of demographic variables does not markedly differentiate the study findings, the contribution, however, of some of them (e.g. sex, family type, location) to the formation of the family functioning relationship and children's self-esteem appears to be significant. This study concludes that the more adequate the children perceive their family functioning, the higher appears to be their self-esteem, while on the contrary, the more inadequate they perceive their family functioning, the lower appears to be their self-esteem.
