The aim of the present paper was the development of a standardized test of mathe-matical problems of additive type for students attending the third grade in elementary school. Eighteen (18) representative problems from all the categories of additive type problems comprised the initial test material, which was pilot tested using a sample of 112 students enrolled in 7 randomly selected elementary schools of Patras. Following the error analysis of the various wrong alternative choices, 14 problems remained and were included in the final version of the test given their satisfactory psychometric properties. This material was then administered to 336 students enrolled in 12 randomly selected elementary schools of Patras (and not included in the pilot phase of the study). The statistical analysis suggests that the test has satisfactory psychometrics attributes of reliability and validity and can be used as a tool of evaluation the capabilities of students in solving addition and subtraction mathematical problems in the third grade of elementary school.
