Abstract:
This paper will examine Romani identity from an exogenous viewpoint, focused not on whom the Romani think and feel they are, but rather on what others make of them, through official discourse, political action, and educational policy. The utility of such an approach can be illustrated through reference to Erving Goffman s (1963) observations on stigma, because in Europe there is no group more despoiled than the Romani. For Goffman, stigma is the spoiler of identity par excellence, arising in the space between one’s private personal identity and history, and one’s social identity, who he or she is taken to be by “normals”.
