Abstract:
Writing is a demanding task requiring the orchestration of mechanical, cognitive and metacognitive resources. Writing anxiety constitutes an individual difference that refers to a general avoidance of writing production. Recent research has revealed the debilitating effects of lacking metacognitive skills and/or writing anxiety on the quality of the written product. The present study aims to correlate metacognitive skills and writing anxiety and to investigate their effect on students' writing performance in Greek as a native language and English as a foreign one. The results report that writing performance is positively correlated with metacognitive skills, while negatively correlated with writing anxiety in both languages. The relationships regarding metacognitive skills, anxiety and performance in writing across the two languages are very significant. In foreign language writing, language use and spelling contribute more to writing anxiety. Our findings are compared to similar research findings. Deriving instructional implications are also addressed.
