Abstract:
The implementation of worked examples in the teaching of Home Economics constitutes an alternative instructional strategy that enables students to apply the knowledge they have acquired to novel problems. The teacher separates and divides a complex problem to simpler sub-problems, prompts students to realize the causal links between the sub-problems and problems, and to search for solution procedures by applying prior knowledge to unknown situations. Finally, the students design a solution formula that can be applied to almost all problems germane to the main problem put under consideration. Thus, cognitive load is reduced, critical reasoning is encouraged and enlarged cognitive schemata can be easily accessed and retained in memory.
