Abstract:
Teachers' stress falls under the general category of occupational stress and has caused the concern of researchers around the world because of its serious consequences both on people and on educational institutions (schools). Having taken into consideration the fact that all the international bibliography draws direct links between teachers' stress and the leadership of schools, this essay seeks to investigate the possible connection between the principles' ways (styles) of leading schools and how they can affect teachers' stress in the primary educational system of Cyprus. The necessity and importance of this particular project is imposed by the lack of similar studies in Cyprus. Moreover, it will highlight the need for improvement of the theory and the action that needs to be taken in primary education, in Cyprus. The analysis of the results revealed that a remarkable number of teachers show a high level of stress which statistically has to do with the leadership style of head teachers, as it is perceived by the teachers themselves. "The Four Frames of Leadership" (structural, human, political, symbolic) (Bolman & Deal, 1992) which were considered important elements for the investigative analysis of the leadership style of head teachers, proved to be connected with the occupational stress of teachers. Specifically the human frame of leadership statistically relates negatively with the teachers' stress to a higher degree. An important connection has also appeared in the effectiveness of head teachers as managers and as leaders to the stress of teachers.
