Abstract:
The present paper attempts to evaluate the overall contribution of Manolis Triantafyllidis in the field of vocabulary teaching. Triantafyllidis' theories and suggestions are a major aspect of his work. These ideas, although being innovative for his time, have not been adequately emphasized as he is primarily known for his work on grammar. His original views of vocabulary, which has only recently emerged as an autonomous field in linguistic research as well as in language teaching, reveal his profound academic and pedagogical skills as well as his perceptiveness concerning the importance and value of a field lacking attention at the time. He is, therefore, not to be considered merely the forerunner but the introducer and founder of Applied Linguistics in Greece.
