Abstract:
This article demonstrates that schools can reinforce the rising of a democratic society by the use of systematic methodology and curricula proposed by Reconstructionism as a philosophy of education, and its leading proponents, Brameld, Toffler and Counts. The paper first analyzes three criteria through which education can become a tool for achieving social consensus; the use of a maximum presentation of evidence; the maximum communication of that evidence; and the maximum agreement among the widest possible range of people. Then, the article shows how certain teaching techniques and specific subject matter can be used in schools to offer the greatest potential for democratic outcomes. Finally, a brief conclusion follows.
