Abstract:
Written text comprehension is a complex intellectual activity that reflects complicated human behavior. More specifically, the comprehension of argumentative texts is more difficult, since it requires high abstractive thought and, consequently, metacognitive knowledge and skills in order for the reader to manage cognitive load. In regards to students-readers the use of cognitive tools, such as computers, appears to be particularly beneficial. The main purpose of this study is to present the planning and the structure of educational software "Vimata brosta- Vimata pros to kimeno" that aims to develop the necessary metacognitive knowledge and skills for argumentative texts comprehension. The particular software is based on the theoretical frame of the text-centered approach as well as the cognitive-procedural approach which successfully supports students in regards to effectively manage cognitive load during argumentative text reading. Furthermore, it proposes a program of teaching comprehension while simultaneously utilizing the characteristics and the possibilities of the computer as a cognitive tool for its implementation.
