Since the school year 2006-2007 the subject of Language in Primary School has been taught through new school handbooks. As the authors of both the new curriculum for the teaching of the language subject in Primary School and the new handbooks contend the approach that has been adopted for the teaching of the language subject and more specifically of grammar is a communicative one. The aim of this paper is to bring out the fact that, despite the statement made by the authors of the curriculum and the new handbooks about a communicative approach of the language subject and more specifically of grammar, the teaching of grammar is more grammatically-oriented than communicative. In order to support this conclusion, I initially present conversations, that took place in the application of the program Teaching of functional use of language. Analysis of these conversations will show what communicative approach of grammar in the context of this program/approach means. Then, I move on to critical analysis of the principles and views/positions of the curriculum with regard to the teaching of grammar as well as of the views/positions of authors of the new handbooks, that are reflected in the teacher's handbook, on the teaching of grammar with the use of examples of approach of grammatical phenomena which derive from the language handbook for the student and the relative exercise handbook that accompanies it, both of which constitute the materialization of theoretical principles and views/positions both of the curriculum and the teacher's handbook. Comparison of the way grammar is approached on the one hand in the context of the program/approach Teaching of functional use of language and on the other hand in the context of the new handbooks reveals that the way grammar is approached in the context of the new handbooks is more grammatically-oriented than communicative.
