Abstract:
The present study investigated the relation between academic underachievement and a number of socioemotional variables, including the student's mood, state and trait anxiety, the occurrence of stressful life events, and the students' perceived relationship with parents and the teacher. The sample included 50 3rd-6th Grade students who experienced learning difficulties (LD) as according to teacher ratings and their performance on standardized reading and math achievement tests, and 47 age-matched controls who scored in the average to low-average range on these tests. LD students scored significantly higher on state and trait anxiety scales, reported fewer opportunities for independent activity by their parents and accumulated more negative judgments by their classmates. Reported levels of anxiety correlated strongly with a history of stressful life events as well as peer acceptance. Finally, peer rejection and perceived lack of a caring paternal relationship emerged as significant, negative predictors of academic achievement.
