Abstract:
In the specific study we are investigating the role of memory in math learning. More specifically, we are looking at children's memory processes related to learning disabilities in math and compare them with children without learning difficulties. Memory is considered very important for the acquisition of math. In this study we are presenting results from two research projects taking place at the 3rd and 4rth grade of primary school. We are using the psycho-metric tests of Athina and WISC III. Both tests evaluate the function of short and long term memory. The results revealed statistically significant differences between the achievements of students with learning difficulties and the achievements of the students without learning disabilities. Differences appeared in memory processes, more precisely, in the long term memory. Finally, we propose ways of improving student's memory and ways for effective math teaching.
