Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to analyse the work of a primary school principal in Cyprus and the time she dedicates to the various tasks relating to the management and administration of the school by looking into how she distributes her time. The findings were obtained by shadowing a primary school principal for a week in her work place, a school in the district of Paphos. In the first part the theoretical basis of the subject is considered by examining the existing bibliography. In the second part there is a detailed presentation of the case study and its results together with the views of the school principal. Analysis of the data reveals the main areas in which the school principal dedicates her time. In the third part there is a concise commentary on the results with reference to the international bibliography. We then proceed to make proposals for improving the execution of a school principals' duties in all sectors. For the best possible apportionment of the time that a school principal dedicates to the various tasks, as well as for the better presentation of research results, we split up a principal's work into three sectors: administrative, instructional and her involvement with the extracurricular activities.
