Based on the work of Elias and his colleagues regarding the implementation of socialemotional programs within school settings, the author discusses the challenges and possible solutions to improve outcomes for students with mental health needs. From the point of view of a special educator, he essentially focuses his comments on the potentials benefits of schoolwide approaches for students with the greatest psychosocial needs. He also supports the idea of the integration of social-emotional and academic support as the best approach to assure that no child and especially those with mental health needs will be left behind.
