Abstract:
This paper reviews psychological interventions for the promotion of treatment adherencein adult patients with chronic physical illnesses. In particular, empirical research incorporatinginterventions to improve adherence to hypertension, HIV, and cancer treatments isreviewed according to the recently established Chambless criteria for the dissemination of efficacioustreatments (Chambless & Hollon, 1998). This review highlights difficulties in this areaof research including lack of randomized controlled designs, variation in adherence outcomemeasures, and few empirical studies on adherence to treatments for more severe illnesses (i.e.,cancer). Implications of this review include the importance of improved scientific rigor forstudies incorporating treatment adherence interventions, and the importance of increasedresearch on treatment adherence for more severe illnesses (e.g., cancer, HIV).
