Abstract:
The last twenty years services and knowledge about conditions in pervasive developmentaldisorders have been improved. However, today there are still people with borderlineabilities who are either misdiagnosed or undiagnosed and in many cases they receiveaccurate diagnosis only after referral of symptoms of mental health problems. One of theseexamples is being presented in the case study of Khaldon. He is a second-generation adolescentimmigrant in Britain with Turkish background. Interviews with his mother and withKhaldon reveal that he has an undiagnosed pervasive developmental disorder, specificallyAsperger's syndrome. Despite the limited information about Khaldon, it is notable that heneeds support for additional mental health problems. This case study presents Khaldon'spsychological problems, the difficulties he faces because of Asperger's syndrome, the confusionof mental health professionals in diagnosing Asperger's syndrome from psychotic disorderand vice-versa and proposes the guidelines of a treatment adapted to Asperger's syndrome.
