Abstract:
The expressive function of language, i.e., the marking of the intimate reactions of the speaker to a given experience, often results in formal deviations that may permanently affect the phonemic make-up of the word. As an illustration of the “expressive” accidents that may affect a base, a number of forms, from various Indo-European languages, are shown to be derived from one and the same reduplicated root designating various objects or substances combining softness and resilience, such as mushrooms, sponge, mucous membranes, marshland, and the like.
