In this paper which is a general contribution to the study of the telephone conversation, we investigate the caller's request to be connected with a certain person with whom he wants to communicate. Studying the function of the above mentioned request in the whole construction of the telephone communication, we maintain that this request is in itself a cause of the telephone summons distinguished from the cause of the telephone conversation. More specifically, we examine both the utterance variation and also its corresponding social values according to social para- meters (tact, formality, informality, etc.) as they are used by the members (professors, students, employees) of the university community.
