Abstract:
The paper aims to examine if the meaning of colloquial 'tautologies' in English and Greek corresponds directly to the content of the tautological proposition expressed in logic as A=8. The non-violation of the reasonableness conditions, by a structure which at first sight -and not only seems to state the obvious, suggests that a more 'subjective', a notional specification of meaning should be pursued. It is precisely such an account which distinguishes the definitivization of the repeated element of the structure, through profiling of substructures, and sheds some light as to the basis of the generated implicatures.
