This study examines the crucial role of language and the variety of narrative techniques employed in mediating reality (news reporting) in both the print and electronic media. It focuses on the process of selection and discourse transformation that makes up the 'news'. The conclusions reached concern four basic points: 1) the degree of narrativization encountered ranges from a linear, cause-effect scheme of chronological account to a complete fictionalized and dramatized account of the events recorded (narrative hegemonism), 2) there is a need to focus on new areas of research and to formulate a new typology that will account for the emerging new hybrid forms of text types in media discourse (infotainment, etc.), 3) the implications of narrativity for the function of objective newsreporting needs to be further explored, and 4) the broader confirmation that the use of specific narrative techniques and narrativization variables changes according to the sociolingiuistic profile and the 'audience design' adopted by each medium.
