Abstract:
The aim of this article is the examination of some applications of Occam's principle ("the simplest possible analysis is to be preferred") in linguistics and more precisely in diachronic linguistics. Ιt is argued that this general principle is very useful for linguistic research, but it must not come in conflict with some fundamental principles of linguistics, e.g. the regularity of phonetic changes and the naturalness of several phonetic processes. Ιt is concluded, however, that an analysis, embracing the criteria of economy and generality but not that of simplicity, should be also considered a short of application of Occam's principle, given that it restricts the number of partial explanations.
