Abstract:
The political economy of tariff protection attributes the erection of trade barriers to interest group activities and preferences of the electorates in conjuction with developmental ideologies on part of the politicians. Political decisions are explained by using economic theory. A regression analysis using nominal protection rates, calculated for the years 1970 and 1979, has a dependent variable to explain variations in the measured level of tariff protection. Certain industry characteristics are used as independent variables. The "economic self interest approach" has a certain explanatory power comparatively greater than all the formulations used, in order to test the workability of "social consern approach". However, including the capital-labor ratio in the first approach, improved the statistical quality of the estimated parameters slightly. Planned tariff rates, as opposed to the rates for imports of EC origin, with reference to the non EC imports, could also be explained by using the "economic self interest approach" extended, using the capital-labor ratio.
