Abstract:
The history of the port of Pireus in the Middle Ages is quite obscure. During the Byzantine period the port was apparently used by the emperors Constans II and Basil II and seems to have been occasionally visited by commercial boats. However, the close proximity of pirate bases in the neighbouring islands of Aegina, Salamis and Makronesos prohibited its extensive use. Early in the fourteenth century the Vicar General of the Catalan Grand Company, Don Alfonso Fadrique, attempted to turn the port into a base for corsair raids of Catalan boats on neighbouring Aegean islands. This project failed, however, due to an effective intervention of Venice, which prevented a further development of the port through a series of treaties.
