Abstract:
The chrysoteles was an officer rarely mentioned in the primary sources, mainly in the seals (second half of the 10th century-11th century). The chrysoteles was sent to the themata and to the cities of the Empire, in order to collect taxes, which were payed in gold. From this particular responsibility probably derives the name chrysoteles. The term chrysoteleia does not designate a special tax, as it has been proposed, but generally the payment of taxes in gold. It has been supported that the chrysoteles was a subordinate of the judge of a theme or that he was an officialof the eidikon. In my estimation, the chrysoteles belonged to the genikon logothesion, as it is indicated by the information of the Codex Vaticanus Palatinus Gr. 367 (fol. 88v 1. 1-3). His duties were similar to those of a dioiketes, who also belonged to the genikon logothesion.
