Abstract:
The history of prostitution is as old as the history of humanity. However, it was differently regarded in each historical period: with tolerance in the Greco-Roman antiquity, as morally reprehensible in the Christian period. Almost all Byzantine sources contain references to prostitution and prostitutes. Oneirocritica (dreambooks) offer a particularly valuable contribution in the study of prostitution. The explanatory approaches of prostitution and the prostitute as oneirocritic symbols reflect the historical period in which each oneirocritic manual was written, as well as the influences each one of them has received. The essential elements that result from the study of oneirocritic resources are the following: (a) the management of prostitution in the Oneirocritica, is included in the wider frame of the management of love affairs, (b) the contrast which has been marked in the explanatory approach between the prostitute and the brothel, brings into sight a more humanitarian approach to the social problem of prostitution.
