Abstract:
The present conference contribution engages in a balanced examination of the events of the second phase of the First Norman campaign against the Byzantine Empire (autumn 1084 - summer 1085). A comparison is made between the information contained in the «Alexiad» of Anna Komnene, the sole Byzantine source about the war, and what Western sources recount, chiefly the «Gesta Roberti Guiscardi» by William of Apulia (Guillaume de Apulia). Certain problems arise, namely:1. With regard to the identity of the individual leading the first Norman landing operation on the shores of Epirus prior to the attack of the main Norman host.2. The port whence the Norman fleet set out from.3. The number of naval battles that took place off Corfu.4. The dating of the controversial naval confrontation off Butrint (Greek, «Vouthrotón»).A closer examination of the sources in question suggests, as presented in this paper, that the account of Anna Komnene preserves pieces of information that are more reliable than its Western counterparts pertaining to the aforementioned issues.
