Abstract:
Sign languages are visual-gestural systems used by Deaf people. They are natural human languages and as rule-governed and structured as spoken languages, but with some differences regarding acquisition and competence due to issues of social/educational disparities. Sign languages display the usual sociolinguistic influences in terms of regional and social variation, contact and bilingualism/diglossia, standardisation etc., plus some Social variables peculiar to the Deaf community. Social attitudes to deafness also arise, ranging from blatant to aversive disablism.
