In this paper I try to investigate how the model of classes of objects (Gross 1994a, b, c) could contribute to research dealing with basic vocabulary and vocabulary teaching. The classes of objects constitute homogenous groups of nouns from a semantico-syntactic point of view, which helps us describe every predicate. Their use in classroom enables us to: a) teach words taking into consideration their paradigmatic and syntagmatic dimension, b) teach vocabulary in an ‘economical’ way by making the most of the hyperonymy / hyponymy relationship, c) concentrate on different uses of polysémie predicates, d) teach syntax and semantics of the target words simultaneously.
