Abstract:
The use of arbitrary or exaggerated attribution/categorisation or evaluation both in news stories and in various types of texts in the print media can indicate some interesting tendencies, which add the characteristic of colour not only to the print media but to the modern Western societies, as well. More specifically, the use of certain words that attribute significant qualities to relatively insignificant situations and/or personalities or the frequent occurrence of arbitrary evaluation/categorisation can be interpreted as populism. However, such phenomena can be further interpreted in terms of a more general tendency on the part of the human being to focus almost exclusively on the tangible, and the visible, on that which can be fulfilled with the least possible effort and at the least possible time. Moreover, they indicate lack of moderation and lack of the sense of proportion.
