Abstract:
The columns on language usage in the Greek newspapers and periodicals are examined in order to identify the linguistic and ideological standards by means of which Standard Modern Greek is being conceptualized and spoken of in public discourse. Although the linguistic standards employed reproduce parochial ideological oppositions, which belong to the history of the perennial Greek language question, in recent years a significant change has occurred in the conception of ‘proper usage’. A new model has emerged, which places emphasis on a small set of writing practices, focusing on particular constructions; this new ‘phraseological ’ model tends to replace the once dominant ‘grammatical’ or ‘morphological’ approach, which used to place emphasis on the morphology and the etymology of words. While the traditional model was considered appropriate for general education, the new one can be seen as means for securing ‘symbolic distinction’ to a smaller group of craft professionals (writers, editors, proofreaders).
