Abstract:
This paper deals with a well-known variety of newspaper language, the headline language. Front-page headline constitute a structured, stylistically marked unit of news discourse, i.e. a microtext, which is greatly accommodated by ‘melodic’ punctuation marks (question mark, exclamation mark, suspension points) and quotation marks as well. These marks convey interpersonal (social / affective) meanings in their own right. In particular, as illocutionary pointers they indicate non-assertive speech acts, while expressing various non-referential meanings, and as projection pointers they turn a text to an overtly polyphonic ensemble, where connotations play a crucial role in textual meaning production. Drawing on material from national newspapers, this paper aims to describe in detail the specific uses of interpersonal punctuation in headline language and support the assumption that headline punctuation (along with grammatical punctuation) makes up a continuum of markedness ranging from stylistic neutrality to pronounced expressivity.
