Abstract:
In the field of assessment and measurement of proficiency and performance of learners during the teaching process of any cognitive area there is a tendency towards alternative methods of assessment as opposed to traditional ones. General qualities of these alternative methods of assessment could be the authentic activities for measurement and the learners ’ involvement in measuring their own and their classmates’ abilities. The paper deals with checklists and rating scales as tools that can be applied to all types of assessment, educational or other. They are a set of criteria and description, which enable the assessor/evaluator to detect the weaknesses, the inadequacy or the advantages of the text being assessed. During the teaching process, checklists and rating scales enable teachers to measure correctly and evaluate objectively and accurately their learners’ performance and allow learners to be aware of what exactly they are assessed at and -based on the checklists’/rating scales’ criteria- to improve the quality of their work.
