Abstract:
The Greek State Certificate for Language Competency (GSCLC) passed its own examinations (in 2003) in the four most taught languages in Greece. The test is now in operation and has been welcomed by both school owners and students. The first exams in Italian and French took place in April 2003 and those in German and English in November 2003. All tests have been offered and assessed in the traditional pen and paper format. This study investigates the possibility of creating a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) for the GSCLC examination. In particular, we investigated other CATs that exist in the market today, namely TOEFL, GMAT, Quick Placement Test (by CUP and OUP), and further discuss types of exercises that can be computerized with current technology. We further categorize advantages and disadvantages, locate problematic areas of existing CATs and suggest methods for improvement. Finally, we propose an approach for the creation of a CAT for the GSCLC and suggest a method of implementation.
