Abstract:
This article concerns with the presence and the role of the Arabs foederati in the byzantine Dioikesis tes Anatoles from the 4th century to the Islamic conquest. We focused on the relevance of the role of the Arabs foederati in the Byzantine defensive system of the region as a deterrent against the wreath coming from the Arabic Peninsula and from the Arabs allied of the Persians, for more than three centuries. The Arabs foederati in the Byzantine army proved militarily effective but they could not resist to the new Islamic army. Finally we compared the new Islamic warfare with the old traditional of the preislamic Arabs and analyzed the consequences of that in the conduct of the war during the Islamic conquest in Syria and Palestine.
