Abstract:
The ottoman candlestick from the monastery of Docheiariou in Mt Athos is cast in two sections attached by a threaded post: Its waisted concave base has a slightly recessed shoulder and spreading foot. The neck is cylindrical and the socket of truncated conical form with ridged mouldings, is decorated in horizontal registers with chased and engraved designs. The base is decorated with bands of flowers and pierced leaves. Our candlestick is very similar to four other published examples in the Freer Gallery of Art, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, in the property of a European Collector. All date to the late fifteenth/early sixteenth century. The bold form and confident execution is consistent with metalwork ascribed to the reign of Bayezid II (r. 1481-1512). The range of decorative motifs can even be paralleled in bookbindings of the period, placing it with certainty into the corpus of decorative objects from Bayezid’s reign. It is pertinent also to note the deeply waisted drumbase that relates it to earlier Anatolian metal works from Siirt or Konya.
