Judas’ kiss and the transfigurations of Christ
Author:
Abstract:
This short study examines two motives of the biblical narration, concerning the capture of Christ in Gethsemane: 1) why Judas kisses his master as a sign that he is the one to be arrested, and 2) the motive that the Master had the ability to transform himself, in order to avoid his arrestation. Both motives can be traced already in early Christian tradition as well as in the Middle Ages. The motive of transformation can also be found in a Thracian planctus Mariae and is linked to the legends about traitors and friends, plants and animals (also human beings), who helped Christ by hiding him or surrendered him to the soldiers.
