Abstract:
The administrative and religious centre of the deme of Thorikos lies on the Velatouri hill, around which agricultural and mining activities took place. Traces of a prehistoric settlement have been located on hill 26.50 (ΓΥΣ map 6478/5). The area was continuously inhabited from at least the end of the Neolithic period to Roman times, and flourished during the Classical period, when there was intensive exploitation of the mines. Of the large number of workshops known, those at Skitzeri and Kavodokano are described here.Skitzeri: present area 1689 m2 but originally greater. The washeries are of flat type I. There is evidence for its use from the second half of the 5th c. to the middle of the 3rd c. BC. Water was drawn from the then copious large streams in the plain. There are ruins of an extensive residential settlement in the surrounding area.Kavodokano: area 1209 m2. On a rocky hill to the west are several water cisterns. Enclosure wall 0.70 m. thick built of ro ugh stone blocks and bedrock. Areas distinguished: residential (I) and workshop (II). I: at the north, west and south. Courtyard with at least ten rooms and a large hall 14.70 m. long (refectory?). At the east, entrance 2.21 m. with a four-sided porch. The most important find is the inscription ΦΙΛΟΚ(ΡΑΤΟΥΣ), which is certainly the name of the owner. The entire region was densely occupied. Mine galleries and shafts and water cisterns all around. Extensive settlement on the Spilia Hill. It has been suggested that through these finds a new discussion could start for the site of the deme of Phrearrioi.
