Abstract:
In 1993, two grave stelai were found at the village of Plaisia in the prefecture of Ioannina. They belong to the type of stelai from Northwest Greece, which developed in the 3rd c. and continue to be found down to the 2nd c. BC. The characteristic features of stelai of this category are the crown mouldings, the dentils, the astragals, the branches, the sank cartouches and the tabulae ansatae. All these features are to be found in these two stelai, in which the decoration is additionally enriched by floral scrolls and depictions of living beings. These elements belong to the Hellenistic koine, directly recall the art of the major Hellenistic centres, and reveal an eclecticism characteristic of the style of provincial workshops. The two stelai discussed are directly related to the artistic tradition of Hellenistic Ambrakia, capital of the kingdom of Pyrrhos (295 BC), at which the existence has been recognised of an important centre that played a leading role. At the s ame time, the use of elements such as figurative relief representations enables us to assign the two stelai to a series of monuments, found from Apollonia to Aetolia, which are clearly influenced by Southern Italy, Macedonia, and Alexandria. The first of the two stelai (MI 7614), in which the inscription is also preserved, dates from the turn of the 3rd to the 2nd c. BC. The second (MI 7615) is later and dates to the first quarter of the 2nd c. BC.
